Onyx FAQ

Most slabs of onyx are what a geologist would call banded calcite. This same material also goes by the names onyx marble, Mexican onyx, or Egyptian alabaster. Onyx is commercially classified as a sibling to marble because these two stones have the same mineral content.
Caring for onyx is similar to caring for granite, wiping up counters regularly with a gentle cleanser, water, and a soft cloth or paper towel. As with any surface, simple preventative measures should be taken to protect onyx countertops. Wipe up spills and moisture as quickly as possible, and use coasters, trivets, and cooling racks.
This high onyx content gives quartzite its robust properties, making it resistant to abrasion, etching, and heat, which are essential qualities for a countertop material.
Onyx countertops are heat and scratch-resistant but require periodic sealing to maintain their stain resistance.
